Stephen Sewell is one of Australia’s most celebrated and experienced writers.

Well-known for his film and theatre work, including his AFI Award winning film script of THE BOYS as well as plays such as THE BLIND GIANT IS DANCING, DREAMS IN AN EMPTY CITY, IT JUST STOPPED, THREE FURIES, THE GATES OF EGYPT, HATE, SISTERS, TRAITORS and KANDAHAR GATE.

Stephen has worked as a playwright, screenwriter, dramaturg, script editor, as well as theatre and film director. He works across a range of genres, from drama to cabaret and musical theatre.  His extensive screenwriting career includes work as screenwriter and script editor with some of Australia’s most significant films, such as TRUE LOVE AND CHAOS and CHOPPER.

He has directed productions of SISTERS, TRAITORS, HATE, THE UNITED STATES OF NOTHING and the short film LET’S WAIT.

He wrote and directed the feature film EMBEDDED, starring Laura Gordon and Nick Barkla. The film premiered at Sydney Film Festival in 2016 and was also screened at Canberra International Film Festival.

Stephen’s plays have been produced by Australia’s leading theatre companies and state festivals including productions at Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, South Australian Theatre Company, Company B, Malthouse, as well as Sydney Festival, Adelaide Festival and Perth Festival. in 2013, his play IT JUST STOPPED had its London premiere to great acclaim.

His most recent awards include the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for THREE FURIES, an Australian Council Literary Fellowship and the prestigious ANPC Award for Significant Contribution to Australian Theatre (2004).  His play MYTH, PROPAGANDA AND DISTASTER IN NAZI GERMANY AND CONTEMPORARY AMERICA won a AWGIE for Best Play, Victorian Premier’s Award for Literature, NSW Premier’s Award for Literature and the Victorian Green Room Award for Best New Play.  His film THE BOYS won both the AFI Award for Best Screenplay from an Adapted Source and the Film Critics Circle Award.

Stephen is Head of Writing for Performance at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, in Sydney.  Other posts include: Chair of the Australian National Playwrights Centre; lecturer at Centre for the Performing Arts, Adelaide; Literary Fellow at UNSW and; Visiting Fellow at UNSW (2010 – present).

In addition to his theatrical and film work, Sewell has published three novels; BABYLON, ANIMAL KINGDOM and THE CAPTIVE.
