Lally Katz is one of Australia’s most-produced playwrights who also writes for film and television.
Lally wrote the libretto for Opera Australia and Barking Gecko’s operatic production of John Marsden’s much-loved book THE RABBITS which premiered at the Perth International Festival and will be remounted for Sydney Festival in 2016. Other world premiere plays in 2015 include TIMESHARE at Malthouse and THE CAT / THE DOG at Belvoir.
Lally’s play NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH was written for Australian actress Robyn Nevin and first produced at Sydney’s Belvoir theatre. It toured to the Melbourne Theatre Company for a 2014 revival while a new production, starring Miriam Margolyes, opened at the State Theatre Company of South Australia. Lally is currently adapting the play as a feature film with Gillian Armstrong attached to direct and Marian Mcgowan producing. The play is published by Currency Press.
In 2013 Lally’s one-woman show STORIES I WANT TO TELL YOU IN PERSON played to packed audiences at Belvoir and Malthouse Theatre and was remounted off Broadway in New York. In 2014 it transferred to Hothouse Theatre and Brink Productions in Adelaide. In 2015 ABC-TV commissioned and produced a television adaptation of the show, produced by Matchbox Pictures and starring Lally.
Lally’s work for television includes adult one-hour dramas WONDERLAND, WENTWORTH and SPIRITED and children’s series THE ELEPHANT PRINCESS. Lally is currently writing an original television series for Matchbox / NBCU.
Lally’s cannon of stageplays include RETURN TO EARTH and THE APOCALYPSE BEAR TRILOGY for Melbourne Theatre Company; A GOLEM STORY for Malthouse; GOODBYE VAUDEVILLE CHARLIE MUDD for Malthouse / Arena Theatre; FRANKENSTEIN, THE MYSTERIES: GENESIS and double bill WAIKIKI PALACE / HIP HIP HOORAY, all for Sydney Theatre Company; WHEN THE HUNTER RETURNS for The Gaiety School of Acting in Ireland with a return season at the Dublin Theatre Festival; GOODBYE NEW YORK, GOODBYE HEART for The Production Company in New York; and THE BLACK SWAN OF TRESPASS which played at Malthouse, Belvoir and the New York International Fringe Festival and THE EISTEDDFOD, which played at Melbourne’s Storeroom Theatre, Malthouse, Belvoir, PS 122 and Richard Foreman’s Ontological Hysteric Theatre in New York City, which were both produced by Stuck Pigs Squealing Theatre.
Lally has received many awards and nominations for her work. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH was nominated for four Sydney Theatre Awards, including Best New Australian Work, Best Mainstage Production, Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Mainstage Production (Robyn Nevin) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Mainstage Production (Kris McQuade). The play was also nominated for an AWGIE, a Helpmann Award and a NSW Premier’s Literary Award. A GOLEM STORY and GOODBYE VAUDEVILLE CHARLIE MUDD both won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and RETURN TO EARTH was nominated for a NSW Premier’s Literary Award.
In addition, FRANKENSTEIN was nominated for a Queensland Premier’s Award for Best Drama Script; THE BLACK SWAN OF TRESPASS won the New York International Fringe Festival Producer’s Choice Award and won several Green Room Awards; and THE EISTEDDFOD won the 2004 Best Independent Production Green Room Award.
Lally participated in the attachment programme at the Studio at the National Theatre in London in 2009 and won a British Council Realise Your Dreams grant for 2010. Lally was a Churchill fellow in 2010 and was appointed a Writer In Residence at Melbourne University in 2011. In 2012 Lally won InStyle Magazine’s Women Of Style Award in the arts category and in 2013 she was the inaugural recipient of an Australian Writers’ Foundation Playwriting Grant. Lally was awarded a 2015 Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award.
Lally is currently working on new commissions for Belvoir and Melbourne theatre companies and developing her own material for the stage and screen.
