Angela Betzien is a playwright and screenwriter.

Angela is currently writing episodes for two Matchbox Pictures television series, both one-hour dramas.

Through her company, Real TV, Angela has produced and toured her theatre work internationally for more than 15 years which has been seen by approximately 100,000 Australian school children.

Angela had two world premiere play productions in 2016; THE HANGING at Sydney Theatre Company and EGG at Melbourne Theatre Company. THE HANGING was shortlisted for the NSW Premier Literary Awards 2017. HELICOPTER (originally MTC commissioned and produced) had its second season at the Norwegian National Theatre in Oslo where it played in repertory in 2015 and 2016.

In 2015 MORTIDO (Belvoir/ STCSA) was directed by Leticia Caceres and starred Colin Friels and the play was nominated for a Victorian Premier’s Literary Award. THE DARK ROOM (Belvoir) won the 2011 Sydney Theatre Award for Best New Australian work and the production was nominated for a total of seven Sydney Theatre Awards.

TALL MAN was originally commissioned by Creative Regions in Queensland and later played in Brisbane at the Powerhouse and then at La Mama in Melbourne.  It is currently being re-conceived as a larger play titled ICE AGE which Playwriting Australia has supported extensively.

Many of Angela’s early plays were written for young audiences and produced by Real TV solely or with partners.  WAR CRIMES was commissioned by the Sydney Opera House and won the 2012 Australian Writers Guild Kit Denton Disfellowship, the QLD Literary Award for Playwriting and it was nominated for a NSW Premier’s Literary Award. WHERE IN THE WORLD IS FRANK SPARROW? was commissioned by and premiered at Graffiti Theatre in Ireland in 2012 and had a return season in 2014.

HOODS toured extensively throughout Australia and internationally to Cortile Theatre Im Hof, Italy and Dschungel Wien Theaterhaus Austria in 2010.  THE GIRL WHO CRIED WOLF was commissioned and produced by Sydney Opera House Education and Arena Theatre and appeared at the ASSITEJ world congress for children’s theatre. CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SKIRT toured Australian schools for three years and won the 2005 Drama Victoria Award for Best Performance by a Theatre Company for Secondary Schools. Even earlier works were PRINCESS OF SUBURBIA (Real TV) and THE KINGSWOOD KIDS (La Boite).

THE TEENAGE ALCHEMIST was commissioned by ATYP and Camp Quality and had very successful runs in NSW a as a specific piece for young audiences to promote awareness and sensitivity around childhood cancer.

Angela was the Patrick White Fellow at Sydney Theatre Company in 2013, a recipient of the 2015 Australian Writers’ Foundation Playwriting Award and she won an AWGIE in 2015 for Community and Youth Theatre for co-writing THE GAP. In 2016 Real TV was awarded Brilliant Careers funding by Screen Australia to accelerate Angela’s transition to film and television writing.
