Angela Betzien is a multi-award winning writer. Angela’s latest work had world premieres in 2016; THE HANGING at Sydney Theatre Company in August, and EGG at Melbourne Theatre Company in July, both opened to wonderful reviews. THE HANGING is shortlisted for NSW Premier Literary Awards 2017, Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting. She is a founding member of independent theatre company Real TV; her work has toured widely across Australia and internationally.

Belvoir Theatre’s production of Angela’s play THE DARK ROOM won the 2011 Sydney Theatre Award for Best New Australian work and was also nominated for several other awards including Best Mainstage Production and Best Direction of a Mainstage production. Her play WAR CRIMES won the 2012 Kit Denton Disfellowship and the QLD Literary Award for Playwriting; and was nominated for a NSW Premier’s Literary Award in 2012. She was the Patrick White Fellow at Sydney Theatre Company in 2013, recipient of the 2015 Australian Writers’ Foundation Playwriting Award and is currently the recipient of the Kim Williams’ Fellowship. Angela was also awarded an AWGIE in 2015 for Community and Youth Theatre for co-writing THE GAP.

Angela has had many successes in children theatre. Angela’s play CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SKIRT toured Australian schools for three years and won the 2005 Drama Victoria Award for Best Performance by a Theatre Company for Secondary Schools. Another work, HOODS, toured extensively throughout Australia and internationally to Cortile Theatre Im Hof, Italy and Dschungel Wien Theaterhaus, Austria in 2010. WHERE IN THE WORLD IS FRANK SPARROW? was commissioned by and premiered at Graffiti Theatre in Ireland in 2012 and had a return season in 2014. Angela’s play THE GIRL WHO CRIED WOLF was commissioned and produced by Sydney Opera House:Ed and Arena Theatre and appeared at the ASSITEJ world congress for children’s theatre.

In 2015, MORTIDO premiered at Belvoir, directed by Leticia Caceres in a co-production between State Theatre Company of South Australia and Belvoir. Angela’s play HELICOPTER had its international debut with the Norwegian National Theatre in Oslo. 

Angela’s other work includes: HELICOPTER (Melbourne Theatre Company); TALL MAN (Creative Regions); THE TEENAGE ALCHEMIST (commissioned by ATYP and Camp Quality); PRINCESS OF SUBURBIA (Real TV); WICKFIELD WONDERLAND (Canberra Youth Theatre) and THE KINGSWOOD KIDS (La Boite).
